Pacific North Cyprus Hire Cars and You

A great holiday stay in North Cyprus requires hiring a car. There is very little public transportation in the country, and if you really want a taste of Cypriot life you need to have a car at your disposal. At Northern Cyprus Car Rental we pride ourselves on offering you some of the most economical and comfortable vehicles for your use while on vacation. We also value the feedback you, our customers, provide us on the cars we offer. Your feedback helps us determine what type of car to invest in when we start to look for newer models to offer you.
Knowing what you think about the cars we offer helps us recommend a car to other renters. Based on your feedback, we can give you and future renters of Cyprus Car Hire a look at how all of our cars compare, both good and bad. Read on to find out what you think of our cars. After all, you, our customers, drive them all over North Cyprus. You will know what the positive and negative aspects of each car are.

Ford Focus
The Ford Focus is a five seat vehicle and we offer them in both manual and automatic. It comes with power steering, central locking, airbags, ABS, and electric front windows. It is one of the best family cars we offer our renters, although it is better suited for families with small children as the back seat can accommodate two car seats if needed. It also has a large boot, making it convenient for renters with a lot of luggage. The biggest disappointment in the Ford Focus that our customers have pointed out to us is that it loses power going uphill. It will do the job, but it just takes a little longer to clear the top.

Ford Fiesta
Ford Fiesta???s have come a long way since they were first introduced by the company in the 1970s. The models of today look nothing like their predecessors. They are more streamlined and the hatchback option gives the renter a lot of room for luggage and other items. We offer this car with air conditioning which is needed during the summers in North Cyprus and very much appreciated by our customers. It is another car that is great for small families and it has a powerful engine to get you around North Cyprus easily. The biggest downfall of our Ford Fiesta???s: we do not offer it in an automatic transmission.

Hyundai Getz
Hyundai???s have a great track record for being reliable vehicles that are economical and easy on gas. It is a great small car that can seat four to five people comfortably. With air conditioning and the option to hire it in automatic and manual transmission, our customers enjoy visiting Northern Cyprus in one of these vehicles. Unfortunately, the Hyundai Getz is not conducive to four passengers with a lot of luggage. It has a very small boot.

Fiat Punto
The Fiat Punto is a nice family car that falls in the same category as the Ford Fiesta and the Hyundai Getz. It can easily seat four to five people and comes with manual or automatic transmission and air conditioning. It actually is roomier than its Ford and Hyundai counterparts, something our customers have marveled over time and time again. With a powerful engine, the Fiat Punto can easily pull the hills around the mountains of Cyprus. The biggest downfall of the Fiat Punto? It has a really small boot.

Hyundai Matrix
Not to be confused with the Toyota Matrix, the Hyundai Matrix is in the same category as the Fiat Punto, the Ford Focus, and the Ford Fiesta. It offers our customers manual or automatic transmission, air conditioning ??? you simply cannot visit this island in the summer without air conditioning ??? power steering and economical driving. Our customers find this a great, comfortable car with a large boot and the most room in all of our saloon vehicles. Tall people have a problem with the high seats and the lack of headroom, but for the most part holiday makers in North Cyprus have really praised the roominess this car offers.

Suzuki Jimmy
The Suzuki Jimmy is one of North Cyprus Car Hire???s classic car hires. This great 4 x 4 is favored with our off-road adventurers and they come in a soft top with a summer and winter roof. Comfortable and stylish, the Suzuki Jimmy is deceptive as it looks smaller than it really is. It can easily accommodate four adults with minimal boot room. With seatbelts in the front and the back, it is one of our most popular rentals. The Suzuki Jimmy has one downfall. It does not come with air conditioning. The summer soft top, which we put in place in May, can be removed so that you can enjoy the fresh air and fun that jeeps are known for. But when you drive a Jimmy in the heat of the day in August, you will wish for air conditioning.

Suzuki Samurai
Along with our Suzuki Jimmy we offer our more adventurous customers the Suzuki Samurai. This is the cheapest vehicle in our fleet and it comes equipped with a soft top. It is a 4x4 and while our Samurai???s are not the newest in our fleet, we make sure they are in top running condition. They are economical and great for two to four adults. We do not recommend this vehicle for families because there are no seatbelts in the back of these vehicles. This has been one of the biggest complaints our customers have made about this jeep. Additionally, there is no power steering or power anything with the Samurai. We???ve actually had some customers tell us driving one of these is like driving a tank. Why do we still offer this vehicle? Because the adventurous holiday makers in North Cyprus like the fact that this vehicle is cheap to hire and can go off road.
There you have it: the good and the bad of some of North Cyprus Car Hire???s vehicles. Each year we try to find out what you, our customers are looking for in a rental vehicle. We take this information into consideration every time we start to look for new vehicles for our fleet. We have added quite a few over the last couple years based on recommendations made by our customers. This feedback is more than valuable. It is a vital part of our business and we cannot encourage you enough to fill out our surveys after you have vacationed with us.

Is there something else you would like to see us offer? We are open to suggestions. Maybe you know of a newer car that we could consider. We offer smaller, more economical cars to our customers to help keep holiday costs low so we are always looking to add compact cars to our fleet. When you take into consideration the roadways in Northern Cyprus, you can also understand why larger cars are simply not an option. Add to that the lack of gas stations on every corner and you can see why we stick with fuel efficient economy cars.
We would also love to get your feedback on some of the newer cars we have added to our fleet. What did you like or dislike about the Volkswagen Polo? Did you find the Toyota Corolla comfortable and everything you hoped for? What about the Suzuki Vitara 4x4 Soft Top? These are just some of the vehicles we need your feedback on. Help us help you decide what type of vehicle you need on your holiday.

What Side Of The Road Are You Driving On?

What Side Of The Road Are You Driving On?

Taking a vacation in a foreign country is one of the most exciting things you and your family will ever experience. When visiting North Cyprus, you will be able to see a land that is steeped in rich tradition and history. It is a land with pristine beaches, beautiful mountains to explore, meadows and vistas teaming with flora and fauna, small villages that are warm and inviting, and historical ruins that are amazing in their complexity.

While visiting North Cyprus offers you a wide range of things to do ??? from swimming in the ocean waters to hiking up the Five Finger Mountains ??? there is one thing you will need to adjust to while visiting: driving on the left hand side of the road. If you are visiting North Cyprus from a country that drives on the right hand side of the road you will need to be aware of which side you are driving on at all times. The last thing you want is for you vacation to be ruined due to an accident that could???ve been preventable.
Here is a mantra to keep in your head if you are visiting North Cyprus from a country other than the United Kingdom: ???Left is right. Right is wrong.??? Sounds a little confusing, doesn???t it? If you keep it in your head, you will ensure that you stay on the proper side of the roadway. When you pick up your vehicle from North Cyprus Car Hire, we will even remind you of this fact before you drive away. Your safety is important to us.
It is, undoubtedly, a disconcerting feeling to drive on what seems to be the wrong side of the road. Not only do you drive in the left hand lane, the vehicle you are driving will have the steering wheel in the wrong place. When you get a car from North Cyprus Car Hire you will notice that the steering wheel is on the right hand side of the car. The gear shift in a manual transmission vehicle will be to your left. Yes, this is even more confusing if you are not used to it. We recommend that you hire an automatic transmission car if you???re not used to this set up.
What else can you do when you are new to driving on the left hand side of the road? Here are some tips the staff at North Cyprus Car Hire have put together to help you get used to things being backwards on the road.

Tip #1: When in North Cyprus, keep to the left
The United Kingdom and North Cyprus are just a few of the countries where driving is done on the left hand side of the road. We cannot stress this enough. The left lane in North Cyprus is your regular driving lane while the right lane is the passing lane when allowed. If you are not quite comfortable driving in the left lane, do not try to pass a slower car or truck ahead of you. Take your time and get used to driving on the opposite side of the road instead.
Tip #2: General driving rules apply in North Cyprus but things come from the opposite directionMost of the standard driving rules that you learned in the country where you learned how to drive apply in North Cyprus. Many of them are common sense. While you may not understand all of the text on the road signs in the country, the pictures that accompany them are self-explanatory. Also, the signs along the road will be to your left along the roadside as that is the side you are driving on. Additionally, keep in mind that when you approach roundabouts and four way stops, the traffic is going to merge from the opposite side.
Tip #3: Keep an eye on your speed at all timesAs if you do not have enough to worry about remembering to stay on the left hand side of the road, it is a good idea to keep to the speed limits when driving in North Cyprus. You are going to be fighting your natural instinct to drive on the right hand side of the road, unless you are from the United Kingdom. By keeping your speed at the speed limit you give yourself the extra time your mind will need to make a decision when needed, especially on roads that are very unfamiliar to you.
Tip #4: It???s okay to follow that crowdYou can get a lot of useful information about driving in North Cyprus by watching the other people that are driving. By paying attention to how other drivers exit parking lots, how they come out of junctions, and how they handle roundabouts you can learn how to negotiate the roads on the opposite side from what you are used to. However, if you should happen to be leaving the airport, try to follow the North Cyprus Car Hire employee that met you or a taxi cab so that you are following someone used to driving in the country.
Tip #5: Take the time to get familiar with your North Cyprus Car Hire vehicle
Remember us mentioning the gear shift in a manual transmission vehicle being to your left in a car where the steering wheel is on the right? This is why it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the vehicle you hire before driving away. The brake and gas pedal will be in the same position ??? gas on the right, brake on the left ??? but you need to know where all of the other controls are located. It is better to take the extra time than try to find turn signals and windshield wipers before you hit the road.
Tip #6: Know where the curb is at all times
When you drive in a vehicle that has the steering wheel on the right, the bulk of your car is going to be to your left. You will have problems gauging distances and space. Once again, take your time driving, especially if you drive down any narrow streets, and be careful when you park your car. Additionally, remember that your car bulk is to your left when overtaking other vehicles.

If you can keep these tips in mind when you drive in North Cyprus from a country other than the United Kingdom, you will have no problem at all. And getting used to the new driving situation gives you the chance to take your time and enjoy everything North Cyprus has to offer.

10 Tips for Driving During North Cyprus Winters

Here in North Cyprus we are extremely lucky in that our winters consist mainly of heavy rainfall that can make our roads as slick as heavy snow in other parts of the world. Only the highest mountain elevations may see snow, and if they do it is a rare occurrence. Driving in the winter in North Cyprus can be a challenge, but when you invest in a car from North Cyprus Car Hire during the winter months, you are investing in a vehicle that has been checked out and prepared for the nasty weather.
Driving in the winter anywhere around the world causes you to cope with road conditions that are less than favorable. Slick wet roads can be accompanied by fog, wet leaves and debris, glare from the head lights of other vehicles, wind and of course rain. Add to the weather hazards unfamiliarity with the roads, the vehicle and the possibility of suddenly driving on what you perceive as the ???wrong side of the road???, winter travel in North Cyprus can turn into an adventure.
When you hire a car from North Cyprus Car Hire, we want you to have the best holiday possible. Here are a few tips to help you cope with winter driving in North Cyprus.
Tip #1:
Before setting out on your daily excursion, check the weather conditions
It???s a good idea to be informed about the weather before you set out site seeing. While the weather where you are staying may be warm and sunny it could be something completely different a few hours away. While you may not believe the weather can be that drastic, it can, especially when you travel from the coast to the higher elevation. To be prepared for a change in the weather is to be forearmed to deal with driving conditions.
Tip #2:
Maintain a safe distance between yourself and other vehicles
While you cannot control the driver behind you riding your bumper you can control your position on the road with the car in front of you. If the weather turns wet and rainy, slow down and maintain a safe distance between yourself and other vehicles. It takes longer to stop on a wet road than it does on a dry one. A car can easily hydroplane on a wet road and accidents can occur.
Tip #3:
Consider driving in a lower gear if the road is slick
Wet roads can get as slick as icy roads, especially if you are climbing a hill. Shift down into a lower gear to maintain connection with the road if you feel your vehicle slipping. Drive slower and take your time. Ease your foot off the gas and maintain a safe speed and distance.
Tip #4:
Keep your foot off the brake
Hydroplaning on a wet road can be caused by driving too fast and hitting the brakes. You can easily lose control of the vehicle and start to slide as if you were sliding on ice or snow. When this happens, take your foot off the gas and turn into the slide. Never slam on the brakes. This can make the slide worse. If you are driving a manual transmission, put the car into neutral to help slow it down so you can regain control.
Tip #5:
Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination
You are on holiday so there is absolutely no reason to be in a rush to go anywhere. When you make plans to visit someplace in North Cyprus make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there. Even if the weather report says the day is going to be sunny and mild, it can change in a heartbeat. After all, you are vacationing on an island and you never know what type of weather may come in off the Mediterranean.
Tip #6:
Use your headlights
Because winter driving in North Cyprus consists of heavy rains you should always turn on your headlights so that other vehicles can see you and so you can see the road. Vision during rain storms becomes impaired, and when you add fog to the road conditions you need the extra light. If you are driving in foggy conditions, use fog lights if the car is equipped with them or keep your lights on the low setting. Putting your high beams on in fog will only cause the light to be reflected back at you. When the weather conditions improve and visibility is restored, turn the headlights off.
Tip #7:
Do not drive through flooded roads
There are areas in North Cyprus that flood in the winter due to the heavy rains. No matter what you do, do not drive through high water and flooded roads. High water and flooded roads can cause the car to flood and the engine to stop, leaving you stranded. If the water is high enough and moving at a fast enough pace, it could sweep you off the road all together. Instead, turn around and look for an alternate route to where you are going.
Tip #8:Keep an emergency kit in your car and make sure the vehicle has plenty of fuel
North Cyprus does not boast a lot of gas stations. Before you leave on your trip, make sure you have a full tank of fuel. It is also a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your car that includes boots, warm clothing, blankets, a jacket that is highly visible and warm, and food and water. While North Cyprus Car Hire maintains their vehicles to ensure you do not get stranded, accidents can and do happen. It is better to be prepared and not need the emergency kit.
Tip #9:
Let someone know where you are going and when you have arrived
If you are visiting friends and relatives in North Cyprus during the winter, let them know where you are going if you take a day trip site seeing. Call them and let them know you have arrived safely at your destination and then when you leave to return home or to your hotel. You can also alert the hotel staff as to where you are going and the approximate time you will return. This way if something happens they can alert the proper authorities that something could be wrong.
Tip #10:
Keep North Cyprus Car Hire???s 24 hour service phone number with you at all times
When you rent a car from us we will provide you with 24 hour road side service if the car breaks down or is in an accident. We will bring you a new car hire and make sure you get back to where you are staying safely.

Need a GPS for North Cyprus Car Hire

GPS users traveling to North Cyprus are going to be disappointed when they discover that their GPS systems might work in the country but is sorely out of date. If you???ve visited Cyprus before you probably received a paper map from the car hire North Cyprus company you rented from. That is because there is no current GPS map of North Cyprus available for these systems. You may be able to find GPS maps of the entire island on your favorite locator but old road names and missing streets are going to take a little while longer.

There are rumors circulating around about the government of North Cyprus and most major GPS companies being in negotiations about getting current maps developed and uploaded to this service. The map of the whole island nation can currently be found in Pocket Navigator 6. Some PDAs with GPS capability will also allow you to scan a paper map of the country into the PDA but it still will not give you anything more than the major roadways that are there.

There is some dissension in the ranks, however, between the Cyprus government and GPS systems, not over getting the North Cyprus information loaded but over the place names that are currently being used in North Cyprus. North Cyprus is the Turkish part of the island while Cyprus is the Greek area. While the two sides have co-existed peacefully for some time, there is still a question about North Cyprus using Turkish place names for their GPS system.

The Ministry of Education and Culture are all for the ban basing their reasoning on the fact that the Greek place names have shaped the whole island for centuries and that they will ban the sale of any GPS receivers that are using maps that display the Turkish names. The Ministry even pointed out that according to the UN and UNESCO the names of places are part of a nation???s cultural heritage and should not be renamed lightly.

Visitors to North Cyprus who plan on getting a car hire have little to worry about as the so-called ban of GPS systems would be in violation of the EU free market laws. They will not be able to easily ban the sale of GPS systems regardless of the place names used on the Cyprus maps and they will not be able to stop vacationers to North Cyprus ??? or even Cyprus itself ??? from using GPS systems that include the Turkish place names. Most of the current systems come preloaded with the Turkish information already included. A current GPS map of North Cyprus would definitely help car hirers coming to the island. Many people rely on their GPS systems and an updated one would make travel considerably easier and more enjoyable.

It is interesting to note that despite the Cypriot government trying to ban these devices the North Cyprus government could be looking for ways to getting their maps updated and loaded into the GPS systems currently out there. Additionally, not many governments complain about what???s put in a device. They usually complain about the device itself. There is no word as to how long it could take to get the maps up and running on all GPS devices, and vacationers should keep in mind that the paper map of North Cyprus from the car hire company is really the best way to get around.

Keeping Your Photo License Up To Date

Have you taken a good look at the photo on your driver???s license lately? Does it still look like you? You may be surprised to find that you have changed your appearance drastically enough that authorities or others who look at your photo license may doubt who you say you are. Additionally, some countries, like the United Kingdom, put a statute of limitations on the photo portion of your driver???s license. If you haven???t looked already, take a peek at your license and see just what it says.

Since many of our car hire North Cyprus customers are from the United Kingdom we felt that it was a good idea to mention this fact. As the office manager, it is my responsibility to make sure my clients are hiring their vehicle properly and that requires seeing their driver???s license. I have had to make a few tough calls over the last ten years on customers because they did not look like their picture. And many of them had no idea that the photo part of their license was only good for 10 years. We will still hire cars out to you if your license photo is out of date and still looks like you, but we strongly urge that you get it updated.

To find out if the photo card of your license has expired you should look at section 4b of your license. There should be a year listed here that tells you when you will need to renew your photo. The United Kingdom added the photo card to licenses in 1998 so there is a good possibility your identification has lapsed and you need to get a new picture. The paper part of your license should still be in force as this part does not expire until you turn seventy years of age.

The DVLA of the United Kingdom started sending out renewal reminders in May 2008 to everyone that would fall within the new rules. There is a fee of ??17.50 being charged for the renewal of the picture part of the license and if you do not comply with the renewal you could be facing a fine of up to ??1000.

Once again we urge all of our car hire customers to check their driver???s licenses to make sure that they are up to date and not expired. Driving on an expired license no matter what country you are from is a big deal, and the last thing you want to worry about is explaining to overseas authorities who you are, where you live, and why your current license is not up to date.

Check your license before leaving whatever country you live in when you are traveling to North Cyprus. While we may rent a car to you with an overdue license, there may be other establishments and businesses in North Cyprus that will turn the license away. It is better to have all of your paperwork in order before going on holiday so that you can enjoy it while you visit North Cyprus.

Ercan Airport Car Rental - We???ll Pick You Up

If you have never been to Cyprus then you are in for a grand surprise. It is an island of astounding beauty that ranges from warm coastlines to cool mountains in the middle with everything in between. As a lifetime resident of North Cyprus, I can tell you that you will have the best vacation visiting us here.
There is so much to do and so much to see that you will want to come back time and time again.

Biased? Well, maybe just a little bit, but there is one thing I can assure you of: if you hire a car from Pacific car hire North Cyprus while you are vacationing in our little corner of paradise, you will get first class service from the time you step through the doors at Ercan Airport. We do not have a desk or an office at Ercan Airport. But that doesn???t mean you are going to be left trying to figure out how to get to our offices. Not having an office at the airport simply means that we will come and pick you up.

When you book a car with us, we will ask you if you want to be picked up at the airport. Some visitors like to take a taxi to our office in Kyrenia and linger around the area seeing things first. That is fine with us. But if you opt to be picked up at the airport, we will bring your car hire to you. When you disembark the plane and head to the arrivals, one of my associates will be there waiting for you. North Cyprus Car Hire Pacific Won???t Leave You Stranded

Picture this: You and your family are taking a nice leisurely drive through the beautiful countryside of North Cyprus in your hired car when you suddenly hear this strange popping noise. The next thing you know there is smoke rolling out from under the hood and the engine dies. You manage to get the car coasted to a stop on the side of the road, but you are miles from the next town and you have no idea what is wrong with your hired car.

After all, you???re not an experienced mechanic and you were assured by the car hire agent that the car was in perfect running condition.
While your hired car may have been in perfect running conditions, things do happen that are beyond all of your control. Cars do break down, but if you hired a car from Pacific Rent-A-Car, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about if your car suddenly goes on the fritz. We are here to help you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for things just like this. My team and I try very hard to make sure that our cars are inspected and undergo a rigorous check before we let you sit behind the wheel and use them for your vacation, but even we know that sometimes they just break down.

This is why we provide all our Pacific customers with 24/7 roadside assistance. The service is free and you can reach us at 0090 542 852 1920. Write that number down and keep it with you when you hire a car from us. This way if your car breaks down during one of those road trips you and your family were trying to enjoy, all you have to do is call us. We will come with a tow truck and a new hire car for you. All you will have to do is transfer your belongings from the car that broke down to the new car we provide and go on your way. We will worry about bringing the other car back to our offices.

Additionally, if you should happen to get into an accident with one of our vehicles you should immediately call us. We care about our customers so the first thing we will do is ensure that you are all right, that no one was injured, and that matters are handled the way they need to be during this traumatic time. We will send out a team to collect the car and bring you a new one. If the accident is at night and you???d prefer to wait until morning to get your new car that is fine too. We???ll take you back to your lodgings and then deliver your new car to you in the morning so that you can relax after what happened.

Remember, my team and I here at Pacific are here to serve you, our customers. If anything happens to your hired car while you are visiting us or if you think something could be wrong with it ??? say you hear a strange knocking sound ??? call us. We will be more than happy to check out the car and bring you a new one if you should break down. Our twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week number is 0090 542 852 1920. Keep it with you and let???s hope you never have to use it

TRNC Car Hire Customer Support

Pacific TRNC Car Hire, we value our customers and because we care so much about them we have put strict service standards and processes in place to make sure they get the best service possible. My team in customer support works hard to respond to every query we get from our customers, and while it may take us a few days to do that we strive hard to answer every one within a short period of time. Occasionally it takes longer for us to answer certain enquiries because of the nature of the question, but if you our customers have patience, we will get back to you.

I have read some comments from our customers about our service and TRNC car hire experiences; there were a few comments that disappointed me. While I understand why our customers said what they did about not receiving an answer to the query, it made me think about how we could improve our service. Explaining how our query process works was the best solution I could come up with and I hope that this really helps all of our customers when they are attempting to get a hold of us with their questions.

When you e-mail us at we will get back to you in 2 business days. If you do not receive this response, then we did not get your e-mail. The e-mail will have an enquiry number on it, and we ask that all future communication from you to us includes that number in your subject line. This will help us keep track of the queries we received and it will make it easier for us to get back to you with an answer to your question.

You should receive an answer to your query within two working days. If you have not received an answer from us by that time, we need to know about it. Additionally, if you have an outstanding query that we have not responded to, you need to contact us again ??? with the query number in the subject line ??? so that I know my team has not answered you. This helps us open up a dialogue with you and it will let us prioritize your query. We want to know about your problem and we want to get it resolved as quickly as possible. Your query will get our full attention.

Consider going to our Contact and FAQ Section of our website if you have a general question to see if your question has already been answered there. That will save you time in the long run. However, if the answer is not there, we invite you to e-mail us. Our e-mail once again is . My team and I are ready to answer all of your questions and help you solve any problems you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact us with all of your enquiries and let us try to make your next experience with us a pleasant one.

Tips of getting the best deal !!!

As a result of feedback from customers, I thought it might be useful to explain the principals of our car rental pricing.

As with any other product or service, the price you, the customer, pay is based upon;
??? The cost of providing the service
??? Demand vs supply

Like airlines, the number of people who want to rent a car (or get on a flight) versus the availability of cars (or seats on a flight) dictates the price of that car for that period, so when there becomes less supply - normally closer to the pick-up date, the price will increase. This means that booking close to pick up is likely to be more expensive than booking in advance.

How can our customers, get the best deal? Booking in advance allows Pacific Car Rentals to manage the business more efficiently thus keeping our costs down and allowing us to pass these savings onto our customers.

What is included in the price of hire? The cost of hire includes all taxes and insurance, CDW and collection and delivery of the vehicle within the Kyrenia area. We make a small charge for delivery and collection to the Famagusta / Bogaz area.

Nicosia ??? Your Northern Cyprus Car Hire Takes You Back in Time

As with most beach oriented vacation spots, the crush of the summer crowds in Northern Cyprus can be frustrating. So, with a North Cyprus car hire at you disposal, the divided city of Nicosia can be a welcome break from the beach crowds as you drift back into the timeless culture of ancient Turkey.

Nicosia Car Hire Driving Rules
As in most countries, a driver must be over the age of 25 in order to get a car hire in Northern Cyprus. And, as in the United Kingdom, the traffic flow here is also on the left side of the roads. Any children in the car that are younger than five years of age must not ride in the front seat of a car, and all passengers in the front seat of the car must wear a seatbelt. You should pay close attention to the seatbelt law because fines will be assessed if you are caught driving without one. You should also know that talking on a cell phone is against the law here and you might also be cited and fined for such a violation.

Access between the two Republics has been loosened in recent years so that you may now travel between the two in your North Cyprus car hire as long as everyone in the car has their passport and the insurance information on the car is available for inspection. You should also be aware that there are some restrictions on what goods can be taken across the border. As an example, you can take no more than 40 cigarettes per person when traveling south into the Republic of Cyprus. If you will only be visiting as far as the southern portion of the city of Nicosia it would be easy to park your Northern Cyprus car hire in a car park outside the wall and simply walk into the city on foot to see the sights.

Northern Cyprus Car Hire ??? Historic Sites in Nicosia
Nicosia was first founded around 280 BC and now serves as the capital city of both the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from The Republic of Cyprus. The ancient Venetian walls that once encircled the city are well preserved to this day and several sites in Northern Nicosia should not be missed, including:

The Selimiye Mosque was originally built as St Sophia's Cathedral in the early 13th century and is today the area???s most prominent landmark. The fact that it was designed by a French architect is evident in the style of the building that resembles some of the important medieval cathedrals in France. King Hugh the Second, a 13th century King of Cyprus, was buried at St Sophia's Cathedral with his gold crown placed on his head. That cathedral became a mosque when the Ottomans conquered the island in 1571. If you want to look inside the mosque remember to remove your shoes and be quiet, especially if prayer services are taking place.

What was once the church of St. George of the Latins is now a hamam known as the Grand Turkish Bath. A hamam is a traditional bath where one first relaxes in a room heated with dry air and then moves to an even hotter room before rinsing with cold water. Then, after a body wash and massage, one relaxes in a cooling room. This Grand Bath is located in a grand setting among the arches and thick walls of the old church.

The Great Inn is one of the only inns on Cyprus that still remains in its original format from the days of the Ottoman conquest of the island. A series of inns once spread across the country providing traveling merchants a safe place to sleep during their journeys. The traveler entered through a main gate into a central courtyard where stables for horses and camels were located on the first floor with 68 guest rooms on the level above. This historic inn was recently renovated and artisan shops now occupy both levels of the building.

North Cyprus Hire Cars and Taxi Transfers from and to South Cyprus

It???s a shame that you only ever hear bad press and propaganda about the border crossing between North and South Cyprus.

The reason we do not allow our vehicles to be driven in South Cyprus is simply a matter of insurance cover and recovery. Whilst the restrictions have recently been relaxed by the Greek Cypriot authorities, vehicles from the North may only be driven under 3rd party insurance cover. As you may or may not be aware, we cover all our vehicles with full insurance to provide security for our business and piece of mind to our customers when they hire with us. Therefore, allowing our vehicles to then be driven under 3rd party cover, presents many difficulties for us should there be a problem.

One of the main problems being that commercial vehicles are still not allowed to cross the border, meaning that we would be unable to for recovery of vehicles that have either broken down or been involved in an accident in the South.

We are fully aware that this may cause some of our customers an inconvenience, and we therefore provide taxi transfer services at extremely competitive rates to assist people who wish to fly into either Larnaca or Paphos airports. The rate from Larnaca Airport to our office in Kyrenia in a standard taxi is just ??35, and just ??5 more for a 7-seater (a party of up to 6 people). For any of you who may be concerned about crossing the border with your family and luggage, there is no need to worry. There are many people living in both the North and the South who cross on a daily basis with no problems. The customs personnel on both sides are generally very friendly and helpful, and if you are travelling by taxi, your driver is on hand to help you.

The process itself is very simple. Holders of EU Passports do not require a pre-arranged entry visa, you will simply need to show your passport, which is date stamped both on entry and exit.

North Cyprus Safe Driving Tips

No matter where you live or where you drive, following the rules of the road is imperative to staying safe. In North Cyprus, you drive on the left hand side of the road just as if you were driving in the United Kingdom. As a matter of fact, many of the laws that govern driving in North Cyprus are the same or similar to those in the U.K. The roads in North Cyprus have been improved over the years, and the new carriageway makes driving through the country a breeze.

However, there are a few quirks that Cypriot???s have when they drive that you should be aware of. Standard driving safety rules apply, but here are few things that you should keep in mind to help you stay safe on the roads.

???The speed limit in North Cyprus is a minimum of 65km to a maximum of 100km. Most drivers go about 120km and tailgating is a popular and very dangerous ???sport??? over there. Keeping it between the minimum and maximum speed limits is a good idea.
???Seat belts and understanding the Highway Code is required.
???Do not take the flashing of headlights as an invitation to turn or go first through an intersection. In North Cyprus it means ???I???m coming through???.
???Don???t always trust turn signal indicators as many times Cypriot drivers forget to turn it off.
???The orange light at the traffic light before the red light usually indicates to Cypriot drivers that they should speed up and not slow down.
???Try to keep your cool if you are in a narrow road in town and the car in front of you and one going the other way decide to stop and chat. This is part of the laid back Cypriot life.
???Do not jump the lights even if you see someone else doing it. Cameras have been installed and you will get fined for doing it.
???Beware making a right hand turn in North Cyprus if you are not used to driving on the left hand side of the road.
???Watch out for cars going to the wrong way on a one way street as you???ll get the response of ???I was only going one way???.

Mobile Phone Use While Driving Is A No-No

Using a mobile phone while driving in North Cyprus ??? and pretty much anywhere in the world lately ??? is prohibited by law unless you are using what is referred to as a ???hands free??? unit. A hands free unit could be a headset plugged into the mobile phone that allows you to keep both hands on the wheel or even a blue tooth wireless headset that works the same way. Anything that allows you to drive down the road with both hands available is acceptable.
You have probably seen many people driving down the road holding onto their mobile phone and chattering away without a care in the road. You could even be guilty of doing it yourself. While some countries want to ban mobile phone use in a vehicle all together because it is considered a distraction, they would have to consider banning listening to the radio or talking with other passengers as well. All of these things can be considered distractions, but trying to ban them is next to impossible.
If you are going to use your mobile phone while driving, do it safely. Try to only use it for a brief moment so that your concentration isn???t divided for very long. Always use a hands free method of talking. If you do not have a head set for your mobile phone, you could place your phone on speakerphone for the length of time your need to speak. Holding your mobile phone and speaking while driving is not worth the fine you will receive if you are pulled over by the authorities.

Don???t Drink And Drive In North Cyprus

The hazards of drinking and driving are known all over the world and it is one of the worst things anyone can do. If you are under the influence of alcohol, your judgment is impaired. This means that you could be driving too fast, driving too close to another car, even driving on the wrong side of the road especially if you???re not used to left hand side traffic patterns. If you are going to drink, make sure you have a designated driver or call a taxi instead of getting behind the wheel and causing injury or death to yourself or anyone else that could be with you or part of the accident.
In North Cyprus, it is illegal to drive a car, motorbike, or even pedal bike under the influence of alcohol. You are considered driving drunk if:
??? The breath/alcohol level equals or exceeds 39 microgram???s of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath
??? The blood/alcohol level equals or exceeds 90 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood (0,9 grams per liter)

Use a designated driver. Or, better yet, you be the designated driver and enjoy your drink when you get back to your accommodations safe and sound.

Driving During The Rainy Season In North Cyprus

North Cyprus doesn???t usually get a lot of rain, and during the rainy season the 402mm it does get can make driving hazard. Even though this number is lower than the Mediterranean average, caution is best used when driving. Roads in North Cyprus tend to be very dusty thanks to the lack of rain throughout most of the year. When it does rain, however, the roads get slippery when the dust mixes with the rain. Add to it the cooler weather, drivers in North Cyprus should be very careful driving during the rainy season, especially during the first rainfall.
For the most part, visitors to North Cyprus usually do not have to worry about rain unless they are in the country during the winter rainy season which can start as early as November and go through as late as February. Winters are cold with January and February being the coldest months, although the island is blessedly free from frost and snow unless you are visiting the Troodos Mountain range in the south(Customers who use Pacific Rental car hire in northern Cyprus are restricted to the area and may not take the car hire company???s vehicles beyond the demarcation line into South Cyprus despite news reports to the contrary).
When you are driving in North Cyprus, especially if you are from a country that is not used to driving on the left hand side of the road, you are going to want to be very careful driving in the rain. Most of the roads are well surfaced and comply with international traffic requirements, but the road surfacing, especially in cooler weather, can make the roads as dangerous as if they were covered with snow and ice found in other places. The roads that lead into the most remote places on the island, such as the minor roads around cities and up into the mountainous areas and forests are still mostly unpaved. While the residents attempt to keep them in good to fair condition, they can still be hazardous. During the rainy season, because the rain can be torrential for a brief time, the back roads can get extremely muddy very fast.
Always keep your speed at the post limit or lower to avoid hydroplaning on paved surfaces or possibly hitting a patch of black ice if the temperature is low enough. Make sure you use your windshield wipers at all times, and make sure you turn on your lights so other cars can visibly see you. If you must travel one of the unpaved side roads, try to do it in a four wheel drive. Avoid any standing water as it may be hiding deep and dangerous pot holes and to manage your way through any mud. Use common sense when driving and remain safe.

The Importance Of Having A Baby Seat In Your Hired Car in North Cyprus

Whenever you travel with a small child you always want to make sure that you have the proper child safety car seat with you for your infant to travel in, or make arrangements to have one provided for you at your destination. Today, many car hire companies will provide you with a child safety seat if you notify them ahead of time, usually when you make the vehicle reservations. In most countries, child safety seats are the rule and not the exception. When traveling to North Cyprus, all children under the age of 5 years old are required by law to sit in the back of the motor vehicles and be secured in a proper child safety seat. It is against the law to allow children 5 and under to travel in the front seat. Children from age 5 to 10 may sit in the front only if they have been provided with a booster seat for use with the adult seatbelt, or if a child???s seatbelt has been fitted to them.

Children 5 and under who are not properly secured in a child safety seat during an accident could get severely injured. As gruesome as it sounds, their little bodies could be thrown around the vehicle causing bone breaks, concussions, and other injuries far worse without even considering the fact that they could be killed. A child safety seat secures the infant and offers them a protective barrier of sorts. This is one of the reasons why parents are told to place the seat in the rear facing position and in the middle of the back seat. Additionally, if your child has graduated to a forward facing child seat, using the additional restraining strap helps keep the seat in place should the seat belt fail and the car seat come loose.

If your car hire company cannot provide you with a child safety seat for the duration of your trip, then it is advisable to bring one with you. Most airlines will also accept them for use with their smaller passengers.
