Travel Tips for North Cyprus

North Cyprus Travel Tips

A holiday in North Cyprus is a wonderful mix of familiarity and the exotic.

Language

Most Turkish Cypriots speak excellent English as well as Turkish, so you can nearly always make yourself understood. (English is taught in North Cyprus schools.) The Turkish Cypriots are also very proud of their country, so will be more than happy to help you with information on any subject, from ancient history to the best local restaurant!

Driving

Turkish Cypriots drive on the right as in Britain, and all North Cyrus hire cars are right hand drive. Signs are in international Turkish, so it's easy to find your way around. North Cyprus is not a large country, so you can explore most of the area around your accommodation in North Cyprus with ease in a rental car. Remember to take your driving licence with you when travelling to North Cyprus; you cannot hire or drive a North Cyrus rental car without one.

Currency

The currency in North Cyprus is the Turkish Lira, and there are bureau de change and banks in the major cities who can change money for you if required. The southern Cyprus pound is not accepted in North Cyprus.

Electricity

The North Cyprus electricity supply is 220/240v and most electricity sockets take the familiar UK three pin plug. You may find a few old two pin plugs, but your North Cyprus hotel or local shop will be able to provide you with a two pin plug if you need it.

Time

North Cyprus is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), except during their summer time period, when the clock go forward an hour.
